Here is a historical piece that traverses multiple collecting categories: baseball, politics and pure 1970s Americana. Custom-made by Wilson, this jersey was to be presented to President Richard Millhouse Nixon to showcase the new knit uniform design. Unforgivably, the Senators instead moved to Texas in one of the great baseball tragedies, right up there with the defection of the Brooklyn Dodgers to Los Angeles. A true fan of the game, President Nixon attended many Washington Senators games, was a key figure at the 1969 Centennial of Baseball, and pursued his love of the game even after his resignation and disgrace. This classic Washington Senators top sports the ultimate number "1" on the verso. "Senators" is on front, Wilson size 44 with "72" year tag, NRMT. Ironically, in 1972 (the year of the Watergate Break In), Nixon and the Senators began a similar fall. Eventually, both would move on, one fell from grace and the White House and the other to Arlington, Texas. Originally from Ray Kolas, long-time representative to Major League Baseball for Wilson Sporting Goods. According to Kolas, who gave this to our consignor in 1975, it was to be rolled out at the White House in a special ceremony. They even made up an Agnew "2" (unfortunately long gone from our consignor) so the VP would not feel left out.
