An important archive of handwritten letters, these were sent to General William Temple Withers, member of the Harness Racing Hall of Fame. A Mississippi lawyer who fought bravely alongside General Ulysses S. Grant, ironically his family lost everything to the Union troops who burned his plantation. Withers moved his family to Lexington, Kentucky, and bought Fairlawn Stock Farm. A self-taught horse genius, he purchased Almont ($15k) and Immortal Happy Medium for over $25,000 - an equivalent of about $500,000 today. In less than two decades, Fairlawn had become arguably the most well known stock farm in the world, worth over $11 million in today's currency upon his death in 1889. These letters are incredibly quite detailed and significant; specifically mentioned are many famous horses: Almont, Royal Medium, Happy Medium, Almost Lightning, Rosa Meadows, Royal Revenge, and more. Content includes breeding problems, bidding on horses in auction, races and much more. Some marvelous illustrated stationery such as Turf Field Farm, and the Stock Farm of Lexington. Letters from early horse racing figures to the General include George Van Camper, SB Thomson, JW Brainard, Hamilton Busby, BW Wasson, David Bomer, Simon Wisden, JD Edwards, W Bishop, WW Adams, and many more. A treasure trove of early horse racing and important research. We have done virtually no research so there could be some incredibly important things here, including rare horse racing signatures.
