This marvelous original painting by Ernest Hamlin Baker was used to create the October 14, 1946, cover of TIME. Gouache on heavy artist’s board, this celebrates legendary Notre Dame coach Frank Leahy in perhaps his greatest season. A protege of Knute Rockne, Leahy led the "Fighting Irish" to five National Championships from 1941 to 1953, including a 39-game undefeated streak. This is the first TIME cover to address the role financial support plays in American football, which came to light after the Notre Dame "football factory" played six undefeated seasons. Archivally framed to 18.5x20.5" overall.
