This gorgeous object was hand-painted at the time in pink and gold, a masterful piece of early horse racing folk art. It has the more important dimension of being one of the shoes Neil Gow wore to win the 1909 Prince of Wales Stakes; one of the most important races in England, it is run to this very day. At the time it held a relatively hefty prize of 1,800 pounds. Run at Goodwood on July 29, 1909, the 2-year old was ridden by the American jockey Danny Maher. This was not his only major victory, as this important horse won many integral races in England and the British Isles. Measuring 4.5x5" overall, it reads "Neil Gow Winner of the Prince of Wales Stakes at Goodwood of 1800 pounds July 29th 1909," In EX condition. Neil Gow was owned by the famous Ex-Prime Minister of England, Lord Rosebery. Winston Churchill famously said of his predecessor PM, "He would not stoop; he did not conquer." He could have said the same of his horse.
