This incredible offering features the actual race worn saddle cloth used by Silver Charm during his historic victory in the 1997 Kentucky Derby. There have been only a few winning Kentucky Derby saddle cloths ever offered at auction and the popularity of Silver Charm arguably makes this saddle cloth the most special of them all. Silver Charm had a peculiar style of running to say the least; he often allowed competition to come near him before
shifting to another gear. He earned a hard fought win in the Preakness Stakes before being narrowly denied the Triple Crown in the Belmont Stakes. The great gray would go on to win nine additional major graded stakes events, perhaps most notably the 1998 Dubai World Cup where he bested the top horses on the planet in typical Silver Charm fashion. Ridden by Gary Stevens, Charm was trained by a young Bob Baffert, who scored his first of four Kentucky Derby wins - most recently with triple crown winner, American Pharoah. Silver Charm was voted American champion three-year-old, earned $6,944,369 and in 2007 was inducted into the horse racing Hall of Fame. The attractive design of this saddle cloth was inspired by patriotic colors suitable for “America’s Race” and remains in perfect race worn condition. Also included in this auction are four 8x10" photographs of Silver Charm wearing this saddle cloth. Includes four photos of him wearing it during the race (shown here).
