A classic, this oil painting on board of sports announcer Mel Allen was done during the late 1930s by listed WPA artist John Backstrom. Backstrom created paintings during the Great Depression as part of a federal employment project entitled The Works Progress Administration’s Federal Artists Project, which operated from 1935 to 1943 as a component of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal. The painting has a style that is attributed to WPA art, from the deep, resonant colors, to the similar style of depression folk art used by Grant Wood (another WPA artist) in American Gothic. The rendition of the man who was the "Voice of the New York Yankees" during the 1930s and 1940s, is in the original wooden frame, overall measures 21.5x28" and is in EX+ condition.
