Ornate and truly magnificent, substantial in size, this 19th century brass oil lamp comes with crystal prisms and original circular hand-painted glass shade. Shade features sporting figures including a baseball player, croquet, soccer, and tennis. What is most amazing is that this delicate glass shade survived all these years, this is the only specimen known of this variation of the lamp. This predates the invention of the light bulb by Thomas Edison in 1879. The lamp measures 23" high and is finely constructed of brass with heart shaped eyelets, elaborate flowery designs along the base, with a vase-shaped flute. It was converted to electricity so it is practically useful, and is in full working condition. The shade is 16" wide, the images are brilliant and penetrating, no significant wear that is often the case with painting on glass. Around the shade are crystal prisms, there are two missing that easily can be replaced, otherwise the condition is EX-MT.
