Batter Up! George Wright was the first player in National League history to hear those two words from the umpire as he led off the first game for the Cincinnati Reds on April 22, 1876. The man who helped define the shortstop position signed this waiver of notice for a special board meeting in 1932 when he was a director for the Wright & Ditson Victor sporting goods company in San Francisco. Wright was 85 years old at the time and five years away from his death. His signature is NRMT and the pages are in good condition.
