What a heart wrenching image of dead soldiers on the battlefield, this is entitled on verso "Brady's Album Gallery No 571 View on Battlefield of Antietam." It is among the most desirable of images, because it shows actual dead bodies and created a great controversy during the time. Fascination with the camera's ability to capture a moment in time started during this period and culminated during the Civil War. Stereocard printed in September of 1862, many of the greatest Civil War photographs taken by ground breaking photographer Mathew Brady, commissioned by Alexander Gardner, including the majority taken at Antietam, were actually produced as stereo negatives. The process required two separate images to produce the three dimensional effect. Bottom reads "Entered according to act of Congress, in the year 1862, in the Clerk's Office in the District Court of District of Columbia. Historic piece from a truly historic period and perspective.
