Dominican outfielder Matty Alou was a midseason acquisition by the Oakland A's from St. Louis in 1972, and the former batting champ helped the Athletics to the first of three straight World Series championships, batting .281 in 32 games down the stretch and a robust .381 during the ALCS. Alou used this Hillerich and Bradsby model U1 and it shows heavy use, including original grip tape, pine tar on the handle and lots of ball marks and grain swelling on the barrel. The handle is cracked and held in place by two screws, while "14" is written on the knob in marker.
