This incredible bronze was created for a proposal for the Roberto Clemente Memorial to be erected at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh, and it was later used as a working model for the execution of the Roberto Clemente Cenotaph erected at his home in Carolina, Puerto Rico in 1999. (A Cenotaph is a monument or "empty tomb" erected in honor of a person whose remains are elsewhere.) In excruciatingly accurate detail, this head was modeled eighteen times! Created by Jose Buscaglia Guillermety, the internationally-recognized artist and educator in the field of monumental sculpture, who has authored over 40 public monuments in Puerto Rico and has had major shows at Harvard, Yale, Rockefeller Center, Washington, D.C., Barcelona and Madrid. In 1968, the New York Times referred to Buscaglia’s bronze bust of Robert Frost at the National Portrait Gallery as, “Unofficially the most important gift to the gallery since its opening." It measures 16x8x12" and is signed "J. Buscaglia '97." Easily these are the finest works of Roberto Clemente art ever created, let alone to come to the open market.
