In the 1983 Kentucky Derby, Desert Wine finished second to Sunny’s Halo after a hotly contested stretch drive, a moment commemorated by the famous Sports Illustrated cover. That day, he defeated Belmont winner Caveat and Hall of Famer Slew O’ Gold. Desert Wine won seven graded stakes, including a victory over John Henry in the 1984 Hollywood Gold Cup. He earned over $1.6 million racing in the early 1980s, equivalent to about $3.7 million today. Desert Wine was sired by Hall of Famer Damascus out of the 1999 Broodmare of the Year Anne Campbell, and has himself sired multiple Grade 1 winners Subordination and Ballingary. Offered here is the green, race-worn saddle cloth from Desert Wine's runner-up Derby finish, along with the exercise cloth that he wore in the week leading up to the big race in his morning breezes. This is a rare opportunity to obtain some of the oldest Derby cloths known to exist.
