Yankee fans - and all baseball fans, for that matter - were hardly in the mood for fireworks on July 4, 1939 as future Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig, suffering from a disease that would come to bear his name, graciously declared from the on-field podium that he was "the luckiest man on the face of the earth." This amazing and rare profile shot captures the "Iron Horse's" humility and vulnerability. It's a 1958 print from the original negative, first generation and is EX-MT.
