Sam McVea was born on May 17, 1884, in Texas. He began his career on April 12, 1902, with a knockout win over George Sullivan and fought as a heavyweight during the early 1900s. During his career he fought Sam Langford, Harry Wills, Arthur Pelkey and Joe Jeannette among others, many in France. His last fight was a draw with Jeff Clark on August 2, 1921 finishing his career with a record of 65-16-12. McVea died on December 23, 1921 at the age of 37. You can find singles perhaps, but never a set of these classic, 3.5x6" photos of prominent black heavyweight champ Sam McVea that were printed in Paris and remain unposted. They read: "SAM-MAC-VEA Champion d'Europe Boxe anglaise- Poids lourds" and are in EX condition with minor wear and spotting.
