Life was pretty peachy in 1928. The stock market crash was still a year away, Amelia Earhart made her historic flight, and Mickey Mouse starred in the first motion picture with sound. In sports, Babe Ruth's New York Yankees were on top of the world, but the Philadelphia A's were laying the groundwork for their own dynasty, finishing second to the Bronx Bombers and about to knock them off their perch. Hall of Fame Catcher Mickey Cochrane was the heart and soul of that franchise and went on to win the American League MVP, for which he received this handsome set of very expensive silverware. Each utensil is marked Sterling with the "RW" insignia, has a "C" engraved on the handle and is solid silver but for the blades of the knives, which are stainless. As best as we can calculate, there is over 200 ounces of silver here, which makes this lot quite valuable strictly from a pure metal standpoint. The all-original plaque on top of box reads: "PRESENTED TO GORDON S. MICKEY COCHRANE MOST VALUABLE PLAYER AMERICAN LEAGUE 1928 BY HIS PHILADELPHIA FRIENDS JANUARY 10th 1929." The box is 17.5" x 17.5" x 5". The plaque and all-wood box have some scratches but both are in EX condition, as well as the contents.
