Ground was broken in 1972 and the opening was four years later. Giants Stadium was a multi-purpose football stadium located in the Meadowlands of New Jersey before its demolition in 2010. Back when it was just the figment of designers' imaginations, though, this architect's rendering of the building that would serve as home to the Giants and Jets football team, as well as other sports franchises, was drawn up by the firm of Kivett & Myers of Kansas City, with architect Ron Labinsky the visionary of the stadium that was considered somewhat radical and pioneering in its day. The rendering was painted in gouaches, watercolor and ink by illustrator Jules E. Scheffer, who died eight years ago. Measuring 42" x 30.5" in its frame (22" x 34" alone), the matted painting is signed in the firm's usual Chartpack type rubdown decal. When removed from the frame and matte, the firm's name (spelled incorrectly), miscellaneous notes, numbers and paint test strokes, along with: "NEW JERSEY STADIUM #2." The first major sports venue in New Jersey was so well received, Giants executive Tim Mara championed Labinsky and he reportedly never lacked for stadium jobs thereafter.
