On July 4, 1910, The "Battle of the Century," took place in a stadium built specifically for the fight in Reno, Nevada. Jack Johnson (the Galveston Giant) defeated James J. Jeffries (the Boilermaker) and became the first African American Heavyweight Champion of the World. It was the following day that Johnson’s victory after the fifteen rounds, ignited race riots and celebrations across the nation. This lot includes a piece from both of the fighters. A 1910 flip book of James J. Jeffries is included and is in excellent shape although it is over 100 years old. The other piece is a 1911 Jack Johnson sheet music, Down Memory Lane consisting of 6 pages with covers. EX with minimal creases and folds.
