A politician by trade, August Belmont is perhaps best known for the thoroughbred horse race named in his honor (yeah, he's that Belmont). This lithograph features two Belmont-owned horses, Potomac and Masher, who finished first and second respectively in the Futurity Stakes in 1890. This hand colored lithograph of Chas Zellinsky's sketch comes from Currier and Ives, a well-known printmaking firm from that era based in New York City. Known for their prolific work in producing prints and lithographs by artists, this firm's lithographs depicted American life for the masses. Framed to 33.5" x 27.5".
