On July 4, 1910 Jack Johnson defended his heavyweight title against Jim Jeffries, who had retired undefeated champion after his last fight in 1904. Encouraged greatly by a racist public eager to get rid of Jack Johnson, Jeffries agreed to fight Johnson, but age and an almost six-year layoff, coupled with Johnson's great skill and youth, proved to be too much. Jeffries was easily defeated in a one-sided match. Offered here is an original badge ribbon used at this famous fight. It is made of cloth and reads, "SOUVENIR BADGE JEFFRIES AND JOHNSON FIGHT RENO, NEV. July 4th 1910." Slight fraying on top border. Color and print remain bold. Minor soiling and minor separation at right and lower left borders with no loss of fabric. 1 7/8" x 5 1/2".
