Tony Gwynn is one of the purest hitters the game of baseball has ever produced. The left-hander who captured eight batting titles with his hometown San Diego Padres compiled a phenomenal .338 career batting average and even flirted with .400 a couple of seasons. This lot is comprised of Gwynn's autographed cap (7/10 in silver Sharpie) from a September 15, 1999 home game vs. Atlanta in which the Hall of Fame outfielder doubled twice in the first three innings for career hits #3,047 and 3,048. Also included is a signed batting helmet (8.5/10 in silver Sharpie) from his April 16, 1999 home game vs. the Dodgers in which Gwynn singled twice and doubled in his first three at-bats, raising his career hit total to 2,945. The plaque on the base of the helmet display has the wrong date listed (April 10 instead of 16). Both show nice use and were signed by Gwynn. The helmet display also features a small facsimile gold glove.
