When is a winning streak not quite a winning streak? The official Major League Baseball records reflect that the 1916 New York Giants currently hold the all-time record with 26 consecutive victories. However, one game in the middle of that streak was a tie. While the statistics counted for that game, by rule the game had to be replayed, thus the streak lived on to its 26-game mark. This ball comes directly from the collection of Giants pitcher, Ferdie Schupp. It is an official National League baseball with red and black stitching and is well used-with faded labeling. In Schupp's hand on a side panel is written "Sept. 8 (sic), 16 Brooklyn 4-1 NY to my Brown Beby, Remember Me". This was written to Ferdie's wife. He incorrectly marked the date as Sept. 8th, when in fact the 4-1 Giants win over Brooklyn was on Sept. 7, 1916, which was the first game of the streak. The tied game was the 12th of the streak, a 1-1 deadlock with the Pittsburgh Pirates on September 18. It would extend to the final win on September 30, in the midst of a heated playoff race, a 4-0 win in the first game of a twin-bill with the Boston Braves. The Giants would fall short in the nightcap by an 8-3 score, ending not only their streak but also dashing their playoff hopes.
