On September 7, 1892 at the Olympic Club in New Orleans, Louisiana, James J. Corbett won the World Heavyweight Boxing Championship by knocking out John L. Sullivan in the 21st round. Corbett's new scientific boxing technique enabled him to dodge Sullivan's rushing attacks, and wear him down with jabs. This was the first gloved contest for the heavyweight championship. Offered here is a terrific bronze by the artist Waagen featuring both fighters. Signed by artist on base which is mounted on marble. Fighters are perfect with beautiful patina. The base has been broken at fighters feet, but still intact, could be repaired. Fighters are often offered separately, but almost never in this combination. 25x27(H) x 7."
