A magnificent photograph and hand-writing combination shows Spotted Tail, Great Chief of the Brule Sioux, and wife "Mrs. Spot". Spotted Tail sits atop a log, looking off-camera while his wife lays at his feet, looking towards the camera. The real charm of this 5x7" image are the handwritten notes at the bottom, which include syllabic pronunciation of Spotted Tail's true name, "Cin-te-gi-le-ska", an explanation that his wife "Mrs. Spot" is his "favorite" (she is one of three), and the dating/location, which indicates this photo was taken in 1874 in the "Dakotah" Territory. Overall condition is EX with a near-perfect image.
