This outstanding collection features boxing and Americana fused together to make political cartoon-like creations. Each illustration has been drawn directly onto heavy stock. The original pencil markings are visible underneath the artist's ink sketches. Judging by dates written in the corners ("Mon. 11 A.M." or "Frid. noon") one can assume that these were published in a weekly paper. The binder they are held in says, "1890" on the spine. One picture, for example, features Uncle Sam egging on two bulls. One dark bull has a sign that reads, "Danger of Arrest Jackson". The lighter bull's sign reads, "Danger of Arrest Corbett". Uncle Sam is on the other side of the fence, teasing them. On his side there is a sign stuck in the ground that reads, "American Fighters' Pasture". Another illustration shows Uncle Sam standing in the middle of a seesaw. The center holding the seesaw up is a building with "St. Paul" on it. On one side of the seesaw there is an angel on the "high" side, holding a bag with "$10,500" on it. The lower side has a "fallen" boxer holding a bag with "$1,500" on it. The pit in the ground under him reads, "The Loser's Limbo". A crowd is in the background. This entire lot showcases a spectacular sampling of boxing and American history all rolled into one binder with 41 EX pieces.
