This Pro Model Hillerich & Bradsby bat, with a labeling period of 1916-1921, measures 36" long and weighs 37.6 oz. This George Sisler professional model bat is uncracked and shows evidence of heavy use with a chip in the knob. Many ball marks are visible on the right, left, and back barrel. Ball marks include green ink transfers. Also visible on the bat are bat rack streaks and defined lathe marks in the handle. Small nails have been removed from the barrel and there is a moderate coat of pine tar on the upper handle. The bat was part of a Louisville Slugger traveling display that wound its way through the United States during the 1950's and 1960's; it was taken to the Baseball Winter Meetings and was on display at airports in Texas and at retail stores. A label from the Louisville Slugger traveling display is affixed to the front barrel, and reads: "13. George Sisler (Member of Baseball's Hall of Fame), Clouted with this Louisville Slugger his 257th hit - a home run - of the 1920 season, establishing an all-time American League record for most hits in one season. Sisler led the League that year with .407". The home run established an American League record for 'Most Hits in a Season' that stood for 84 years. The record was broken by Ichiro Suzuki with 262 hits during the 2004 season, and Ichiro had an additional eight games to break this record. The knob has a couple of lathe marks in it, too, making this indeed a special item for auction. PSA/DNA GU 10.
