This lot includes a collection of six pieces of sports artwork, including a Wallace Goldsmith cartoon surrounding a large portrait of Kid Gleason, manager of the Chicago White Sox during the infamous Black Sox scandal of 1919. The cartoon is drawn on a board measuring 18 x 14" with the portrait drawn on paper mounted to the board. There are also two other similar Goldsmith cartoon-surrounding-portrait pieces featuring a Navy football player named Cruise drawn on a board measuring 17 1/2 x 15", and a portrait of boxer Pal Moore surrounded by a cartoon drawn on a board measuring 17 x 14 1/2". Three cartoons by Vic Johnson are also included: 11 x 15" cartoons featuring then-rookies Joe Namath and O..J. Simpson, and also Buffalo's Jack Kemp in the snow; and a 22 x 15" cartoon about the New York Yankees and Brooklyn Dodgers. The three Johnson pieces are on heavy paper resembling oaktag. There are printer's marks written in pencil in the margins of each of the pieces, as these were all likely published as newspaper cartoons. The small Johnson pieces are in excellent condition; the larger one shows staining and yellowing around the edges and a small tear in the upper right corner. The Goldsmith pieces all have staining and discoloration around the edges; the football board also shows some chipping. Overall, the pieces are in very good condition and will make a fine addition your sports art collection.
