Ernie Davis was a coach's dream: modest, hard working, team-oriented - a sportsman who never put down opponents or teammates. "He's the kind of runner you hate to coach against," Penn State coach Joe Paterno said. "You can't instruct a boy to tackle a man if he can't catch him." He led Elmira (NY) Free Academy to a 52-game winning streak in basketball and, as a Syracuse sophomore, helped the Orangemen gain their only national football championship. It is with great pride that we have this jersey for auction. The royal blue jersey was worn by Ernie Davis, and came directly from his family. It may have been worn during his high school years or after. It is made of a heavy cotton, almost like a sweatshirt, but with short sleeves with elastic around the edges. A crinkled white tag has been safety-pinned to the inside collar, and, written in black ballpoint pen, appears "93527 Sat 12." Thick golden satin patches of Davis' number 44 have been sewn onto the front, arms, and back of the jersey. The tagging on the bottom has turned blue from the bleeding of the jersey, and reads, "Champion, Knitwear, Company - Inc., Rochester, N.Y., Size - X - Large, Name." The jersey measures 24" wide across the chest, and 27 1/2" long, from the top of the neck down. Family LOA has been signed by autograph specialist Todd Mueller and Ernie Davis' nephew.
