This priceless trophy is believed to be the only solid gold trophy presented annually to the winner of an American sports event. Made of solid 14 karat gold, the trophy measures about 16 3/4 inches tall and weighs almost 50 ounces. Presented to owner of the winning horse there were two made, one is in the Kentucky Derby Museum and will never be sold. This resplendent trophy is lovingly engraved, “Ninety Sixth Kentucky Derby 125,000.00 Added 1 ? Miles Churchill Downs Louisville May 2, 1970 Won By Dust Commander Owner Robert E. Lehmann.” The base of the cup reads, “8674 14kt” along with “Lemon & Son Louisville, KY.” One of only two Kentucky Derby Winner’s Trophies to have been sold publicly. Mint in original case.
