When Willie Mays stepped onto the field, there was magic in the air. Famous for his bottomless well of skill, and the heart to match, Mays is widely felt to be one of the best fielders of all time. His legendary play at the 1954 World Series, known simply as "The Catch" is one of the most incredible and memorable plays in baseball history. He wasn't just known for his glove, though. When Willie came to the plate, even the most stoic pitchers would start to sweat. He creamed over 3,000 balls in his career, and sent 660 of those into orbit with his mighty home runs. This bat is an interesting specimen for a number of reasons. Firstly, it stands alone as an absolutely stunning game-used bat from Mays. Measuring at 34.5 inches and weighing 34 oz., this Hillerich & Bradsby Louisville Slugger is Willie Mays' personal model, with W. MAYS engraved on the barrel. The bat has a perfect mix of what makes a great collector's bat -- wonderful display quality, but featuring great use and feeling well-loved. The second notable feature of this bat is the Willie Mays autograph it boasts on its barrel, just above the Hillerich & Bradsby logo. Rating an 8/10, the signature is in black sharpie, and is a great example of Willie Mays' distinct and unmistakable handwriting. Finally, the bat itself is a thoroughly unique collectable because it is missing the famous "POWERIZED" brand on the barrel. The manufacturer's records don't show this mentioned on the order, and in the opinion of PSA, who authenticated this bat, its absence is the result of a manufacturer's error. The whole package combines to make this an excellent, rare, and absolute one-of-a-kind item.
