Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig are arguably the two most important figures in all of baseball history. They helped transform baseball from a game into the quintessential American pastime, and were immortalized in the process. Considered almost mythical today, they were legends even in their own time. The two were national heroes, known by every man, woman, and child who had ever heard the crack of a ball against a bat. Thus, one can imagine the commotion caused on Saturday, the eighteenth of October, 1930, when they joined the ranks of a local Yankee farm team in the small town of Lindenhurst, NY, for a game against the team's arch-rivals, the Lindenhurst Athletic Club. This piece, a Home Run ball hit out of the park by Ruth in that fateful autumn game, has been signed by both the Bambino and Gehrig on the date they played in that Long Island town. It is one of only two known to have survived, the other being held in the Lindenhurst Historical Society building. On a day when baseball's gods revealed themselves as men, playing ball with some of the very people who they were idolized by, they etched history into the leather husk of this ball. Both signatures are clear and in black ink, Ruth's placed on the sweet spot, scoring a 9 for strength and Gehrig's grading an 8. The ball's condition is a 5/10, but presents much better.
