It is without question that Frederick Douglass has been one of the most influential African Americans in our nation’s history. The role he played during and in the years following the Civil War are extremely significant and a hand written letter from him to Mr. F.P. Poole, Secretary of African Congress, is a once in a lifetime find. The letter is dated March 13, 1893 and is written on a 5" x 8” piece of paper in black ink. The content of the letter deals with the issue of human bondage and his opinions on the subject, however the letter is quite short and does not represent his opinions with lengthy details. The condition of the letter is EX with almost no wrinkling. A tiny tear on each of the top corners in no way interferes with the content of the letter, and there is a slight darkening of the top border of the paper, a strip that measures 1/2", otherwise the tonal quality is excellent and both the letter and the signature are clearly legible. This outstanding lot is a museum quality piece and a worthy piece of Americana.
