Shibe Park in Philadelphia opened with great fanfare in 1909. This April, 1909 Opening Day display measures 32" x 23" framed. It was a pictorial supplement to the Philadelphia Sunday Public Ledger which was at the time the newspaper of record in the city of brotherly love. There were thousands of disappointed fans cued up outside the gates that April day. Even the "largest bleachers in the world" were not big enough to accommodate the demand to see the Athletics play in their brand new home. Major League Baseball's first steel-and-concrete stadium, it was located on the block bounded by Lehigh Avenue, 20th Street, Somerset Street and 21st Street. The supplement is in EX condition with only the original fold creases visible but not detracting from this piece of Philadelphia's glorious sports history.
