In 1957, tennis great Althea Gibson broke racial barriers to become the first negro ever to win Wimbledon. She then accomplished the same feat at the US Championship at Forest Hills. These (14) wire photos capture those landmark victories, including Gibson receiving her National Tennis Championship trophy from then VP Richard Nixon. Earliest photo shows Gibson in 1950 as the first black woman to ever be invited to play at the national lawn tennis championships. Latest photo reports Gibson working on her golf game in 1960. Sized from 7x9 to 8x10, the front captioned wire photos range in condition from VG to NM.
