San Francisco Giants home jersey worn by Sam Jones during that 1959 season. This cream-colored flannel button-down garment features "GIANTS" arched across the chest in black felt-on-orange twill characters, with the mound ace's number "19" sewn to the back in like fashion. Orange-and-black trim lines the neck and sleeve openings, and, situated on the tapered left front tail, a "TIM McAULIFFE" manufacturer's label is accompanied by a "'59" tag. Within the collar, a felt tag bears an embroidered notation of "Sam Jones" (to differentiate between Sam and teammate Gordon Jones). Moderate wear. Right-hander, Sam "Toothpick" or "Sad Sam" Jones was among the game's most dominant hurlers during his 12-year career. Jones led the National League in strikeouts three times: 1955, 1956, and 1958. On May 12, 1955, he no-hit the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-0 at Wrigley Field, becoming the first African American in Major League history to pitch a no-hitter. He also was part of the first all-black American League battery in 1952. While playing for the San Francisco Giants during the 1959 campaign, Jones had a league and career-best season winning 21 games while logging a stingy 2.83 ERA. He also pitched the first game ever played at Candlestick Park, San Francisco, on April 6, 1960; a 3-1 win over St. Louis, giving up only 3-hits. The same year, on September 26, 1959, Jones pitched his 2nd no-hitter to beat St. Louis, 4-0.
