On February 14, 1951 in Chicago World Middleweight Champion Jake
LaMotta defended his title against his old nemesis Sugar Ray
Robinson. These two had fought five times previously and LaMotta was
the first man to hand Robinson a defeat. This was a hard fought
affair and both men were still potential winners as late as the
middle rounds, but the hard punching Sugar Ray came on as the fight
progressed and began to wear LaMotta down. In the 13th Robinson
unleashed a series of telling blows rendering LaMotta helpless, but
still standing. The referee stopped the action and Sugar Ray Robinson
was World Middleweight Champion. Robinson received the customary
championship belt from The Ring (Magazine), but also received the
award offered here by the National Boxing Association. This award
certificate from the N.B.A. is 15 2/4” x 18 ?” and comes framed
without glass. This award is in recognition of Robinson’s victory
over LaMotta. An exceptionally rare offering. Comes with an LOA from
the son of Sugar Ray Robinson. LOA from Craig Hamilton of JO Sports,
Inc.
