Vintage 19th century National Police Gazette supplement poster of “Our Champion” bare knuckle boxer Jake Kilrain. Poster is titled “The Champions and Ex-Champions of the American and English Prize Ring”. Supplement poster is 25 ?” x 19” mounted to linen. It is VG with the original folds visible as well as several creases and some small tears and tape marks. Poster is dated Dec. 15, 1888. In 1887 Kilrain was recognized by Richard K. Fox of the National Police Gazette as Heavyweight Champion of the World. The awarding of the belt to Kilrain (and this prominent supplement) was part of a strategy by Fox to draw Sullivan into a fight, which succeeded as Sullivan and Kilrain fought in 1889; however Kilrain lost the bout. The fight is recognized as one of the greatest pre-modern era fights.
