It is easy to overlook the fabulous amateur career of Sugar Ray Robinson when you look at all he accomplished as a professional. Before turning pro, however, Robinson was an accomplished amateur. He won the New York Gold Gloves in 1939 as a featherweight and in 89 registered bouts he stopped 69 opponents. Robinson was so noteworthy as an amateur, his backers made up a beautiful robe which he wore near the end of his amateur career and during his early years as a professional, including his first fight. That robe is offered here. The robe is full length blue satin with gold trim. On the back is sewn the name, “RAY ROBINSON.” On the front left pocket are the letters GG NY (for Gold Gloves New York) and the number 42 for the year 1942 when Robinson was fighting as a professional. The robe is in fine condition with no noticeable flaws except some light wear. This museum quality robe is one of the very few documented pieces of equipment to have survived from the early career of Sugar Ray Robinson. This robe was part of the collection of Robinson’s first wife Edna Mae and comes with a detailed LOA from the son of Sugar Ray and Edna Mae Robinson, Ray Robinson II.
