An extremely fascinating piece from the historic 1st baseman. This is a watch fob that Anson used and carried with him often. The fob, made with heavy gold chain, features three really interesting items attached, the best being a sterling silver match safe/striker in the shape of an 1888 baseball shoe which hangs at its end, and is engraved with the year “1888” and his initials “ACA”. There are fifteen real diamonds around the bottom of the shoe, which opens to reveal a compartment for matches to be held with the striking surface inside the heel. Also featured is a small silver ball engraved “Adrian to Virginia, May 15th, 1889” that was originally given from Anson to his wife Virginia but was later attached to his fob. Lastly, a small square charm made of gold with three real diamonds outlining a star and a quarter moon. There is space for a fourth diamond but it is not present in the piece, which looks to be in the shape of a baseball base. An erstwhile item of great interest and history from Anson’s heyday. In beautiful condition.
