Before this slugging legend pirated in Pittsburgh, Honus Wagner was a Colonel in Louisville, as can be seen here in this convex glass masterpiece, oval-shaped in its original frame, a sepia-toned team photo sixteen players strong with the bowlegged Flying Dutchman seated in the middle row, second from right. The stellar shortstop got his start on this National League team before they were nixed and he, along with many of his teammates, was transported to Pittsburgh (his birthplace). With the Colonels, he was a force to be reckoned with, as he would be more so the following decade, finishing often at the top of the leaderboards in batting and stolen bases. Photograph has some slight restoration, though a 9-inch crack creeps visibly along its right side, a couple of chips reveal themselves at top and some water damage lines its way along bottom and right side. Frame has a full but repaired crack at bottom and lots of crazing. Measures 22-1/2 x 16-3/4”.
