First baseman Hank Greenberg could swing a bat with the best ever, a phenomenal force in the 1930’s, the decade from which this battle axe beguiled, he guided his fierce Detroit Tigers to a pennant in 1934 and a World Series title in 1935, as well as hitting a Ruthian 58 homers in ’38 (two short of Babe’s single-season record, and the best anyone could do until fabled 1961!), gaining respect in ’35 with an American League MVP and three All-Star selections (finally!) in the latter part of the decade, and compiling slugging numbers that continuously placed him atop hitting lists. The grace (and occasional righteous ferocity) in which the Hall of Famer balanced the anti-Semitism of the day with the symbolic stature of his being America’s greatest Jewish ballplayer elevated him to an echelon with the likes of Jackie Robinson, who said of Greenberg, “Class tells. It sticks out all over Mr. Greenberg.” This tremendous bat is lathered with pine tar on its handle, and is plentiful with bat rack and ball marks, and nicks and dents all over. Obtained directly from Mr. Greenberg circa 1938, its burned-on signature matches its era with factory records. Weighs 34 ounces and reaches 35 inches.
