Quite an important figure in professional baseball (and American politics), A.B. “Happy” Chandler was the baseball commissioner from 1945 - 1951, and oversaw the integration of African-Americans into baseball’s Major Leagues, with the signing of Jackie Robinson to the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947, a controversial move and one that probably cost the two-time governor and one-time Senator of Kentucky his post as the head of baseball. His contributions to government and baseball were huge, and this 100 pound, 36x30” solid bronze plaque, a home town dedication, is one example of the stature in which he was held by his constituents and the town of Versailles, Kentucky, where he lived from 1922 until his death in 1991. This large piece comes with a relatively small 8x10, signed (9/10) photo of an obviously younger Chandler, standing in uniform and holding a bat to the ground, a sweet, symbolic pose if ever there were one.
