When artist Bill Medcalf (contemporary of Norman Rockwell) wasn’t painting pin-up girls on calendars for major clients of agency Brown and Bigelow, he was applying his great artistic skills to other projects, such as the company’s American Boy series (1953) and Baseball Hall of Fame Series, both of which seem to be instilled in this superb print featuring Tyrus Raymond Cobb overseeing a young boy sliding into a base; Cobb’s amiable facial expression and sub-titled response, “That’s it!”, are of great value, coming from the legend who six times in his career made it to first base, only to then steal second, third and home. In the background of this central action is a faded and subtle newspaper clipping claiming, “Ty Cobb steals 96 bases. Modern League Record” - the subtle background subject a common Medcalf motif. His signature and inscription on this jumbo piece reads, "To Arthur Susskind, From Ty Cobb 2/27/57", and rates a solid 8/10 overall. Trivial smudging to portion just under signature does not detract. In original frame of the period, piece measures 16 x 24”.
