The most desirable piece of collectible baseball game equipment is the game worn jersey. Worn by the Say Hey Kid, the world's greatest living player, regarded by many as the greatest all-around player in the history of the game. The San Francisco Giants road jersey is even more notable because of the season in which it was worn. Early on in Willie Mays' legendary career, 1958 was a historic season - after signing a record-breaking contract for the Giants ($65,000), Mays had his first of a string of 8 consecutive seasons of over 100 runs & RBI's, and an overall MVP-type season, finishing a close second to Ernie Banks (Mays had already won this honor in '54, and would win it again in '65). His .347 batting average was second only to Richie Ashburn, he collected his 1,000th career hit, totaled a career high 208 hits on the season, and became the first player since Kiki Cuyler to steal 30 bases 3 times. The jersey shows extensive use with a nice team repair on the right shoulder and customized sleeves that were adjusted to Willie's liking. "San Francisco" stitched across the chest is restored with original lettering. "24" on the verso is 100% original. "MacGregor [size] 42" tag in the collar and "Mays" embroidered in red thread on a white plate below. An important jersey from one of the greatest talents ever to step onto a baseball field, inarguably one of the greatest influences on our national pastime.
