On tour in Japan in either 1931 or 1934, stuck in an exotic world for the Holidays, Yankee Baseball Great Lou Gehrig sent this Christmas card back to the States. Quite different from the ornate (and occasionally gauche) greeting cards that flood our mailboxes here in America, this precise and simple Asian evocation of winter was seen by the Iron Horse as the perfect representation of both Japanese art and Christmas cheer. Inside is printed “Seasons Greetings from Japan, Lou Gehrig”, in Japanese style, written right to left in vertical columns. EX.
