Jesse Haines performed brilliantly for the St. Louis Cardinals in four World Series, going 3-1 with a 1.67 ERA, and batting .444 with a home run and four RBI's. He was known early in his career for his fastball, but relied later on his unusual knuckleball, which he actually gripped with his knuckles instead of his fingertips. "Pop" was a Cardinal fan favorite, and he held most of the franchise's pitching records until Bob Gibson came along. The Cardinals won the 1926 pennant, as Haines went 13-4. In the World Series, he shut out the Yankees 4-0 in Game Three, hitting a two-run homer to help his own cause. He started the seventh and deciding game and allowed only two runs through six innings, but a blister forced him out of the game. Haines got the win, and the Cardinals were World Champions.
