As a rookie in 1952, he recorded the season's longest run from scrimmage (89 yards), the longest punt return (94 yards), and the top rushing average (7.0 yards per carry) and was a unanimous choice for the league's Rookie of the Year honors. McElhenny spent 14 years in the NFL with the 49ers, Vikings, Giants and Lions and was selected to the College and NFL Hall of Fame.
