Like it was yesterday, this marvelously detailed shot of the stands at the Brush Stadium (Polo Grounds) was taken during the 1911 World Series. The third game, on October 17, matched the Giants’ Christy Mathewson against the Athletic ace Jack Coombs. The Giants had a narrow lead in the ninth when Frank “Home Run” Baker lined a shot over the right field wall, tieing the game for the Athletics. The Giants lost in the 11th inning and went on to lose the Series in six games. This 7” x 5” photo shows those right field stands, which are also nicely covered with period advertising. The location and October 17 date is inscribed on the front along the upper edge, and a Culver Pictures deaccession stamp appears on the reverse. Condition is VG, with a thin chip and a touch of paper loss along the bottom edge, and several hairline scratches.
