How close could people get to soccer legend Pele? Perhaps nobody has had the close professional and personal relationship that the late Pedro Garay had. As Pele’s friend and manager, the bond between these two gentlemen was stong. And that’s what makes this rare collection of personal Pele memories from Pedro Garay and his family so unusual. Born on October 23rd 1940 in Brazil, Pele (who was born Edson Arantes Do Nascimento) is known as the best soccer player to ever play the game. Even off the field, he has made people take notice of his impact. He published several best-selling autobiographies, starred in a number of films and even composed musical pieces. Inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame, he has also done extensive work for children’s causes through UNICEF. All of which is why this Pele collection is so special. Included is a Mitre Multiplex signature soccer ball dated in Los Angeles April 7th, 1978. Signed by over 10 players including George Best! Also included is a green New York Cosmos collared shirt as well as a Pele autographed card measuring 4 x 5 1/2” (signed in black marker on the rear with the words, “good luck” and the Pele signature.) There’s also a black and white NRMT photo signed in blue ink by Franz Beckenbauer (signed To my friend Pedro, the best wishes) The signature was dated 7/24/79. Two other black and white NRMT photos, ready for framing, show Pele being embraced as well as addressing an opposing player. There’s a Cosmos pennant measuring over 18” wide, and another Cosmos pennant with the words 1976 on it. Both are attached to metal bars and have handsome gold fringes. There are two additional soccer banners, one showing the Club Italia logo and the other featuring the words “Federacion Peruana De Futbol.” There is also a rare and personal presentation folder. On the cover is a UNICEF logo from the United Nations and handwritten, the words “Pele in Europe, May 1979. Inside, Pele photos and newspaper stories including Pele in Ireland, Spain, Germany and other European stops. The collection has additional Pele memorabilia including color photos and newspaper articles that touch on the legend’s life. Perhaps Pele’s finest grouping ever, this is one collectable you’ll want to win.
