A calming voice that told it like it was! As a major voice with CBS Radio, William L. Shirer pioneed radio coverage of the war news in Europe. Without rifles or tanks, he used his microphone to deliver just the facts. No wonder this information specialist was considered a “war hero,” worthy of his own V-Gum card in the Victory series. He was all set to be card number 37 (note the hand-written 37 in the lower right corner) when December 7th 1941 hit and the project was put on hold. But the final artwork was already completed for the Philadephia based Gum, Inc., drawn up by the team at the Moll Agency under the art direction of Charles Steinbacher. This original pen & ink artwork shows Shirer up front and a scene showing destruction in the background. The tracing paper was laid over the art board and the pencil coloring and exact detailing was finalized. The piece, measuring 5 1/2 x 8” was locked in Steinbacher’s safe until 1991. Some minor tearing at the top of the tracing paper. Now you can broadcast the fact that you are adding this original piece of Victory Gum artwork to your collection.
