Incredible nine page letter from October of 1965 written to Joplin’s boyfriend Peter de Blanc has both varied and interesting content. Discusses going “up to Beaumont to make the tape”, and being “there about 9 fucking hours doing the damn thing...only got 3 songs!” More: “Neil didn’t really know how to record on his recorder & it was really a hassle. Singing & singing & being nervous, Jesus Christ, I got all weak & shaky....to the tape: two blues: ‘Come Back Baby’ & ‘Once I Lived The Life Of A Millionaire’, and one pretty ballad ‘Once I Had A Sweetheart’ Continued: “Anyway, it’s (her songs) engraved w/the blood from my cheeks, so I hope you like it”. She then goes on a tangent trying to get Peter jealous, talking about going to a nightclub with another couple, “sitting in a real bar bar w/hillbilly or had rock & roll playing, talking & smoking cigarettes.” Goes on at length about her pool playing expertise, “I was champion of E. 6th St. between A & 1st, and that’s pretty good, you know”....”I beat all of the local champions & two dykes....”I guess it wasn’t behavior fitting the demure woman that I am, but hell, I can’t help it if I’m another Willie Mosconi!...Anyway, don’t ever challenge me to a game”. Finishes up with “I really love you, hope you aren’t mad at me...and mostly I love you. XXXX Janis”. Post script on reverse of page 8 Janis wrote “In one of your letters, you asked about the flowers. Well, I told you about them in the letter...(Don’t you read my damn letters?!). They’re purple straw flowers”. Amazingly, kept for all eternity, inside the original mailing envelope, are the remains and stems of ten of the purple straw flowers mentioned at the end of the letter. Save for some minor age toning, the pages and writing are Near Mint all the way. This is one of the finest of the Joplin letters to surface yet, put aside by the owner for many years until now.
